2021 Freehold Wrestling
13 wrestlers that saw varsity action in 2020 were lost to graduation, most notably the program's all-time wins leader, Nico Messina. As a result, this will be a very young team, with just two seniors in the room.
The big name returning is down low, in sophomore Angelo Messina. Messina is coming off a great freshman season in which he was a 30-match winner, the D21 Champ, and a State Qualifier after finishing 3rd at Regions. He's joined by fellow sophomore Michael Connelly, who placed 3rd at Districts last year, to give Coach Shepherd a couple of solid returners in the lowerweights, in what will be a group otherwise consisting of underclassmen that will new to the lineup.
The middle will also have a lot of new faces, so the Colonials will look to returning starters Brandon Smith, a junior, and sophomore Joe Berryman to provide leadership to this group.
The Colonials have five experienced juniors in the upperweights. Among them are Osvaldo Baez and Alberto Pantoja, who were both double digit winners last season.
This is a young team that will have a lot of new faces down low and in the middle, and they'll be tested right off the bat as Freehold opens with Wall and Matawan. A team this young will be looking to get better each time out in the shortened dual season, with an eye on big things to come. They have some guys here that will qualify for the Regions and will be looking to make some noise, including Messina, who was two wins shy of a medal in AC last year.
